The Pleiades LPs

For this project, I was tasked with creating something inspired by the "concept of 7," and I decided to create a fictional band called The Pleiades. The name comes from the star cluster and the Seven Sisters myth in Greek mythology, which felt like the perfect mix of cosmic and legendary vibes to build on.

The band is a punk-feminist group, kind of in the spirit of Pussy Riot, with a strong focus on themes like freedom of choice, bodily autonomy, and women unapologetically being themselves. They’re all about breaking down barriers and challenging societal norms, using their music as a form of rebellion and empowerment.

To tie the project back to the myth’s connection to water (since the Seven Sisters were also water nymphs and associated with rain), I explored the art of Suminagashi, or “floating ink.” I loved how the flowing, unpredictable patterns of the ink felt symbolic of water and freedom.

The textures I created with suminagashi can be seen faintly on the front of the design but are more prominent on the back, adding depth and a subtle connection to the band’s mythological roots.
